The laws of Guatemala permit United States Citizens, traveling with a valid U.S. Passport, to enter Guatemala for visits without a visa. The only time a visa may be necessary for an adoption trip to Guatemala is in a situation where the adoptive parents desire to travel with a child adopted from a country whose citizens are required to obtain a visa to enter Guatemala. The visa requirement would apply if the previously adopted child had not yet obtained a U.S. Passport. As an example, let's say that a family who adopted a child from China in 1999 plans to travel to Guatemala to adopt another child. The family had not yet obtained a U.S. passport for their Chinese child and intend for the child to travel on her Chinese passport. In this case, the child would require a visa to enter Guatemala.
